FREE OPEN WORLD RPGS ON PS5

Free is a loaded word. On PS5 you can download a bunch of open world RPGs without paying a cent, but some of them will try to charge you sixty bucks worth of currency the second you hit the first town. That's the tension I'm working through here. I've spent an embarrassing amount of time with every game on this list, and I'm going to tell you which ones actually respect your time and wallet, which ones are fine if you never spend, and which ones turn into pumpkins around the fifty hour mark.

Let me define the terms up front so nobody yells at me in the comments. Truly free means you download it, play it, and the game never really pushes you to spend. Free to play with heavy monetization means you can beat the main story without paying, but the game is constantly dangling gacha pulls, battle passes, and limited event currencies in your face. I respect both categories, but you deserve to know which one you're walking into.

Genshin Impact

This is the one everyone thinks of first. Genshin is a gorgeous open world action RPG with a map that somehow keeps getting bigger every year. Teyvat is genuinely one of the prettiest places on PS5, and the combat has real depth once you start stacking elemental reactions. The main story is free, all seven regions are free, and every event is free to participate in.

The catch is the gacha system. New characters and their signature weapons come out on banners that cost premium currency to pull. You can absolutely play without spending. I have friends who've beaten every boss in the game on rental characters and a starter roster. But if you see a new five star and your brain does that thing where it starts calculating credit card interest, skip this one.

Wuthering Waves

Kuro Games launched Wuthering Waves as the sleeker, faster, edgier Genshin competitor, and on PS5 it actually lives up to the hype in places. The combat is more reactive, parries feel satisfying, and traversal has this wall running parkour thing that makes crossing the map feel good instead of like homework. The open world itself is smaller than Genshin's but denser with stuff to do.

Same gacha structure though. You pull for new characters, you pull for weapons, and the events run on a constant treadmill. What I like about Wuthering Waves is that the free character giveaways have been genuinely generous. Kuro has handed out full rosters during anniversary events. Whether that continues forever, who knows, but the early signal has been way more player friendly than most of its competition.

Tower of Fantasy

Tower of Fantasy gets overlooked because it came out in the middle of the Genshin wave and got dismissed as a clone. It's not really. It's more of a sci fi MMO dressed up like an open world RPG, and the PS5 port runs surprisingly well. You've got the anime aesthetic, the floating islands, the big bosses, all of it. The wardrobe customization is also way more extensive than Genshin.

The monetization is messier though. Tower of Fantasy sells weapons, which double as characters, and then sells matrices and augments on top of that. There are more ways to spend money here than I'd like, and the power curve feels more pay to win than its peers. Still playable for free, still enjoyable, but you'll hit walls sooner if you refuse to spend.

Zenless Zone Zero

Okay, technically Zenless Zone Zero is not an open world RPG. It's a stylish urban action RPG with instanced combat zones and a hub city. I'm including it anyway because every Genshin fan keeps asking me about it, and the hub exploration stuff has scaled up enough in recent updates that it scratches a similar itch.

The combat in ZZZ is the best of any HoYoverse game. Chain attacks, parries, character swapping, it all clicks. The hub area of New Eridu is small but packed with character vignettes and side content. If you want something that feels more like an anime action game and less like a globe trotting epic, this is the one. Same gacha caveats apply.

Honkai Star Rail

Star Rail is only semi open world, which is why I almost cut it from this list. You move between zones that are more linear than Genshin's seamless continents. But each zone is big, full of puzzles, full of chests, and has that classic JRPG exploration vibe. The turn based combat is also just genuinely great, which is rare for free to play games these days.

On PS5 the presentation is clean and the load times are fast. If you bounced off Genshin because the real time combat felt squishy, Star Rail might click better because every fight rewards thinking instead of reflexes. Same HoYoverse gacha setup, same warnings apply.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2's core experience is free. The base campaign, the patrol zones, crucible, strikes, all of it can be downloaded and played without spending a dollar. That's genuinely surprising for a game that used to charge seventy bucks a year for expansions.

Is Destiny 2 an RPG? I'll fight you about this. You build a character, you pick a class, you farm gear with stats and perks, you upgrade weapons, you theorycraft loadouts. That's an RPG to me, even if the shooting is the main verb. The open world patrol zones like the EDZ and Nessus are beautiful, packed with public events, and you can wander them for hours without paying.

The catch is that the best expansions and the most exciting new content still cost money. Lightfall, The Final Shape, whatever comes next, those are paid. But if you just want a free looter shooter RPG to fool around in, Destiny 2 is genuinely one of the best deals on PS5.

Fortnite OG and the RPG Modes

This one's going to sound weird if you haven't checked in on Fortnite in a while. Epic has turned Fortnite into this mega platform where the battle royale is just one mode among dozens. Some of those modes are RPGs. Some of them are open world. The community has built entire Skyrim clones and Zelda style adventures inside Fortnite Creative, and Epic itself has shipped crossover modes with LEGO that function as survival crafting RPGs.

LEGO Fortnite specifically is worth a look. It's a free open world survival crafting game with building, combat, biomes, taming, all the Valheim checkboxes, rendered in LEGO. It's inside the main Fortnite launcher and doesn't cost anything. The monetization is all cosmetic, which I respect.

If you're a parent trying to find something your kid can play that isn't just shooting other kids in the battle royale, LEGO Fortnite is a legit answer.

PS Plus Monthly Freebies

The monthly PS Plus Essential freebies sometimes include open world RPGs, and when they do, those games are actually free. Free free. No battle pass, no gacha, just a full game that you own as long as you keep your subscription active.

Over the past couple years the monthly drops have included games like Horizon Forbidden West, Kena Bridge of Spirits, and various other big budget adventures that flirt with the RPG genre. You have to be opportunistic about it. Claim every month whether you think you'll play it or not, because if your sub lapses you lose access, but if you redeem and hold, the library stacks up fast.

Right now my personal PS Plus backlog has about forty games in it that I've never touched, half of which are some flavor of open world adventure. That counts as free in my book.

Warframe

I go back and forth on whether Warframe counts as an open world RPG. The hub based mission structure is more like Destiny, but the open world zones, the Plains of Eidolon, Fortuna, the Cambion Drift, Duviri, those are real open worlds with bosses, mining, fishing, bounties, and free roam exploration. You're a space ninja doing ninja stuff across alien landscapes.

Digital Extremes has one of the most player friendly monetization models in the industry. You can trade with other players to earn premium currency without spending. The entire game, including every frame and every weapon, can be unlocked through gameplay alone. It's the rare free to play experience where the studio actually seems to respect that you're not spending.

If you're tired of gacha pulls and you want something with legitimate RPG depth, Warframe on PS5 is a great shout.

The Elder Scrolls Online Free Trial

Not quite free, but worth mentioning. ESO runs free trial weeks constantly, and during those trials you get access to the full base game for seven days. That's enough time to put forty hours into one of the biggest open world RPGs ever made without spending anything. When the trial ends you can decide if you want to buy in or move on.

The base game going on sale for five bucks a few times a year is also common. Not technically free, but close enough that it's worth keeping an eye on if you've never played.

What to Actually Download First

If I'm ranking these by truly free feel, the order is Warframe, LEGO Fortnite, Destiny 2, and whatever your PS Plus queue happens to have at the moment. These respect your time and don't constantly pitch you on upgrades.

If you're okay with the gacha model and you have the self control to treat it like window shopping, Genshin and Wuthering Waves are the two I'd pick. Star Rail if you want turn based. Zenless Zone Zero if you want hard action.

I'd skip Tower of Fantasy unless you've already played the other HoYoverse games and want something different. The monetization just gets more intrusive the deeper you go.

The Monetization Red Flags

Let me give you the checklist I use for any free to play RPG. If a game checks three or more of these, I uninstall.

Energy systems that cap how long you can play per day. Dual currencies that can only be earned by spending real money. Gear upgrade systems where failed upgrades delete your gear. Limited time characters that are never re released. Pay to skip options for content that takes weeks to grind.

Most of the games on this list pass that check. A few borderline cases exist, but nothing on here is actively hostile to free players. That's the bar I'd want somebody to hit if they were recommending games to me.

Final Take

Free PS5 RPGs used to be a joke category. You'd get two or three crusty MMOs and a bunch of mobile ports. That's not the case anymore. Between the HoYoverse lineup, Warframe, Destiny 2, Fortnite's ever expanding universe, and whatever PS Plus drops next month, there's more free content than you could finish in a year of full time play.

The trick is knowing which ones are legitimately free and which ones are sales funnels. Hopefully this list gave you a real answer instead of the usual top ten fluff that never tells you what the catch actually is. Go download Warframe first. Thank me later.
