GAMES WHERE SCALE MATTERS: SIZE AS MECHANIC
The first time I climbed the second colossus in Shadow of the Colossus, I fell off twice and my hands were sweating. Not because the controls were hard. They were, a little, but that wasn't it. It was because the thing was the size of an office building and I was a kid with a sword climbing up its leg hair. Something about the relationship between my tiny body and that enormous moving cliff made my brain go haywire in a way that no boss fight in any other game had ever managed.
That's what I want to talk about. Scale as a mechanic, not just as window dressing. The difference between a game that uses size and a game where size is the point.
The reason big things feel different
Our brains evolved to read scale as a threat indicator. A shape in your peripheral vision that's your size is a person. A shape that's twice your size is a bear. A shape that's twenty times your size is a building, and if the building is moving toward you, your nervous system does something ancient and unhelpful.
Games can trigger that same response because they fake the geometry of presence. You have a camera, you have a character, and the character has a body that sits in a world at a specific proportion. When a designer messes with that proportion on purpose, your gut responds before your head does. That's the trick. Scale is one of the few mechanical levers in games that skips straight past the prefrontal cortex and hits you in the chest.
Most games treat scale as a visual flourish. A tall tower here, a distant mountain there. Those games are fine, but they're not doing what I'm talking about. I'm talking about games where scale is the verb. Where what you do, moment to moment, is wrestle with the relationship between how big you are and how big the thing in front of you is.
Shadow of the Colossus: you are small, they are enormous
Team Ico could have made every colossus the size of a large bear and the game would have worked as a boss rush. Instead they made them the size of cathedrals and turned the combat into mountaineering.
The genius of Shadow of the Colossus is that the scale isn't just for spectacle. It's the entire control scheme. You have to look up. You have to plan a route. You have to grip with your stamina bar because if you let go you're going to fall a long way and hit something hard. The camera pulls back so you can see the whole creature and suddenly you're a speck on a moving mountain. Then it snaps in close while you're hanging off its beard and you can see individual hairs.
That zoom range, from tiny dot to intimate texture, is doing something that most fighting games can't do. It's making you feel both powerful and insignificant in the same ten seconds. You are the thing that brought this giant down, and you are also a flea on its back. Both of those are true at once and the game refuses to resolve the tension.
When the colossus finally collapses, the camera doesn't cut. It lingers on the fall. The ground shakes. Dust rises. The music doesn't celebrate, it mourns. And your tiny character stands next to what you just killed and the scale tells you exactly how you're supposed to feel about it. This is why the game still works decades later. The size is the story.
Katamari Damacy: growing from millimeters to kilometers
If Shadow is scale as dread, Katamari is scale as joy. Keita Takahashi built an entire game around the feeling of starting small and getting absurdly big, and he did it with one of the cleanest mechanical loops in game design history.
You roll a ball. Things stick to the ball. The ball gets bigger. Now bigger things stick to the ball.
That's it. That's the loop. But what makes it sing is the camera, which starts tight and hugging the floor and slowly pulls back as you grow, and the physics of the world, which stay stubbornly consistent while your sense of scale warps underneath them. Early in a level, a thumbtack is a victory. Fifteen minutes later you're rolling up cows. Twenty minutes after that you're rolling up cities and small mountains and whales and eventually, actual islands.
The thing Katamari understands that almost nobody else does is that scale isn't a number, it's a rate of change. The feeling isn't being big. The feeling is getting bigger. The transition is the joy. Every time a new object becomes rollable, your brain does a little dopamine dance because the thing that was a wall a minute ago is now a pebble. Katamari weaponizes this on loop until you're giggling by yourself in your apartment, which is a fine way to spend a Tuesday.
Patapon: you are the god, they are the army
Patapon is a weird one to bring up in a scale essay because at first glance it's not about scale at all. You're drumming, your little eyeballs-on-legs march across a 2D side view, and the camera barely moves. Where's the scale?
It's in the implied position. You're not any of the Patapons. You're the god above them. They chant at you. They obey your rhythms. When a giant boss shows up, it takes up the entire screen and your whole army is the size of one of its toes, and you, invisible, are bigger than both.
That's a scale trick most games miss. You don't have to show the player their size. You can imply it through relationship. Patapon makes you feel cosmic without ever drawing you on screen, because the entire army treats you like weather. Scale as implication. It's the kind of thing that sounds like a small detail until you notice how much of the game's emotional weight is resting on it.
Monster Hunter: the hunter versus the wyvern
Capcom has been running this same trick for twenty years and it still works. A Monster Hunter fight is built on one foundational scale relationship. You come up to about the monster's ankle. Maybe its knee if you're lucky.
That proportion is non-negotiable in the series. Even the small monsters are bigger than you. The medium ones tower. The elder dragons fill the sky. And because the game never lets you outscale them, every fight feels like you're punching above your weight class. You never become the giant. You just get better tools to fight giants with.
The reason this matters mechanically is that the entire combat system is designed around reading a silhouette bigger than yours. Telegraphs come from way up there. You're watching the monster's shoulders to predict a tail swipe. You're running between its legs like you're dodging traffic. The hitboxes are large because the creature is large, and your dodge roll is calibrated to body widths that feel human against geometry that doesn't.
Compare this to a game like Dark Souls, where most bosses are big but you can still stand and trade with them. Monster Hunter refuses that framing. Scale is the mechanic. You are a tool user in a world of apex predators, and the whole game is about closing that gap with craft rather than power.
Ico: scale as vulnerability
Ico is the quiet one in this list and I think the most important. The whole game is about holding Yorda's hand while she's slightly taller than you and not strong enough to climb things without help.
The castle they live in is huge. The ceilings are impossibly high. The doors look like they were built for giants, because they were, and neither of the two children you control belongs in this space. When shadow creatures show up, they're your size, which makes them feel personal, but the architecture is not your size, and the architecture is what's really pressing on you the whole game.
Ico uses scale to make you feel watched. Hunted. Small. Two kids trying to escape a building that was designed to contain things bigger and more dangerous than they are. That feeling, of being undersized in your environment, is what makes the ending hit. The game spends hours making you feel tiny and then gives you a moment of escape that only works because you've been crushed into insignificance the whole way through.
If you're designing a horror game and you want the environment to scare people, study Ico. Nothing in that castle has to jump out at you. The rooms are doing the work.
Octopath Traveler 2's scale tricks
Square Enix's HD-2D style is a scale trick dressed up as an art style. The sprites are tiny pixels. The environments are rendered in full 3D at a scale that feels like a pop-up book. You look down at the world from a high diagonal angle, and the world looks big because the camera is pretending to be a person leaning over a diorama.
Octopath Traveler 2 leans into this harder than the first game. The mountains push into the sky. The cities have verticality that the characters have to climb through. Ships on the ocean feel like ships because the sprite of the character on the deck is absurdly small compared to the boat. The game is playing with the fact that your eye knows 2D sprites are fake and your eye knows 3D environments are real, and by smashing them together at these scale ratios it gets you to feel the size of the world without ever committing to full 3D.
It's a clever illusion and it wouldn't work if the scale ratios were wrong. Nudge the sprite size up ten percent and the whole effect collapses. The game runs on proportion.
Astroneer: planets you can actually walk around
Scale gets weird when you leave the ground. Most space games cheat by loading screens or by making planets into skyboxes. Astroneer decided to make the planets real, which means small, but round, and terraformable.
The brilliant part is that the planets are just barely small enough that you can get your head around them. You can walk far enough in one direction that you come back to where you started. You can see the curvature on the horizon. The planet feels like a planet, not like a flat map, and it also feels like a planet you can fit in your backpack. That tension is the joy of the game.
Astroneer also plays with the scale of what you build. Early on, a solar panel feels like a respectable piece of engineering. Fifty hours in, you've built megabases with rail networks and rocket pads and the solar panel is a decoration. The objects didn't change size. You did, in terms of capability. That's the Katamari trick applied to a survival sim, and it works for exactly the same reason. Scale as a rate of change.
Why scale creates emotion
Pulling this all together, the reason scale is such a strong mechanic is that it maps directly onto feelings we already have about the physical world. We know what small means. We know what giant means. We know what it feels like to stand next to something much bigger than us, or to loom over something much smaller.
Games that use scale well are borrowing that emotional literacy. They don't have to teach you that the colossus is scary. They don't have to teach you that the katamari is satisfying. Your body already knows. The game just has to set up the geometry honestly and get out of the way.
The games that fail at scale fail because they cheat. They show you a giant enemy in a cutscene and then scale it down for combat because the fight was too hard to balance. They show you a huge world and then gate you in corridors that feel just your size. The scale was window dressing, not a mechanic. Your body notices.

How Kaiju Protocol thinks about scale
Scale is the first problem we solved on Kaiju Protocol and the one we keep coming back to. When you're controlling a monster the size of a skyscraper, the camera can't sit where it sits for a regular third person action game. Too close and the player can't see their feet. Too far and the city turns into a map. We're constantly tuning the zoom to keep the kaiju feeling huge without losing the readability of the streets below.
We borrow from Monster Hunter for the telegraph reading. Your kaiju has a silhouette that's visible from blocks away. Helicopters and tanks read your shoulders the way hunters read a rathalos. If you wind up a charge, the whole skyline tells them what's coming. That communication across scale is what makes the asymmetry feel fair.
We borrow from Shadow of the Colossus for the texture. When you put your hand on a building, the camera can come in close enough that you see individual windows with people inside them. Then it can pull back and show you a city in your palm. Holding both of those framings in the same fight is the whole design goal. Feel huge. Feel specific. Don't let either one drop.
And we borrow from Katamari for the progression. Early levels you're tearing up small industrial parks. Later you're stomping downtowns, coastlines, full metropolitan regions. The kaiju doesn't change size much. The buildings do. Scaling the environment around the player rather than the player around the environment keeps the moment-to-moment feel consistent while the sense of scope expands underneath you.
Scale is not a graphical feature. It's not a number in a design doc. It's a promise to the player about what their body is going to feel when they move through a space. The games I've talked about in this piece all kept that promise, in very different ways, and that's why they stuck in my head decades later.
